What do we do?

Group leader Turgut Durduran explains what ICFO-Medical Optics group does.

ICFO optical neuro-monitor

Our "diffuse correlation spectroscopy" technology has recently been commercialized by an ICFO spin-off company "HemoPhotonics" See more

The vision of bed-side neuro-monitoring

Our vision is to be at the bed-side in various places at the hospitals such as the neuro-intensive care units. Our technologies provide real-time information about the cerebral blood flow, oxygenation and volume which in turn inform the clinicians about the well-being of the brain and its function."

Ischemic stroke and optics

One of our research interests is the management of patients who have suffered ischemic stroke. We monitor cerebral blood flow at the bed-side and hope that in the future we will provide valuable information to the clinicians towards reducing the brain damage these patients suffer. This movie illustrates the origin of the stroke as well as the growth of the damaged tissue volume."

Multiple scattering in turbid media

Illustration of light scattering in turbid media. Laser light went through the transparent water "straight". As some milk is dropped it starts to broaden ("few scattering") and when the milk concentration is high ("multiple scattering"), the beam becomes very broad ("diffuse"). The photons are now diffusing. Inspiration for this movie is via Dr Jorge Ripoll.

Light propagation in tissues

Random walk ("migration") of photons in tissues. Multiple scattering and absorption of the photons lead to the so-called "banana shaped" region of sensitivity ("red cloud"). The spectra of the detected light combined with information about the spectra of hemoglobin species and water allow the researchers to measure oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin concentrations.
