Diffuse Optics Diagnosis

Prof. Turgut Durduran and co-authors have published a review on medical applications of diffuse light.

A review paper titled “Diffuse optics for tissue monitoring and tomography” has been published in Reports on Progress in Physics by ICFO Prof. Turgut Durduran, Dr. Regine Choe, Ph.D. student Wesley Baker, and Prof. Arjun Yodh, from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA.
Diffuse optics is particularly useful for measurement of blood flow, blood oxygenation and blood volume in tissues. The authors describe new diagnosis tools and methods based on the diffusion model for light transport in tissues. They develop a theoretical basis for near-infrared or diffuse optical spectroscopy and outline the basic elements of diffuse optical tomography. The paper depicts essential instrumentation and includes representative brain and breast functional imaging and monitoring results.
