Research by Prof. Turgut Durduran on “blue babies” is reported by the El País newspaper.
An article by journalist Mónica Ferrado in the El País newspaper reports on a new technique developed by the group led by Prof. Turgut Durduran at ICFO to be used in collaboration with the Sant Joan de Déu Children’s Hospital in Barcelona and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), USA to monitor blood oxygenation and blood flow in the brains of cyanotic or “blue babies”, babies born with transposition of the great arteries, who exhibit this color because their blood does not have enough oxygen. The system developed by Prof. Durduran consists of a headband with an optical fiber placed on the baby’s head. It uses multiple wavelengths of laser light that are absorbed differentially by oxygenated or de-oxygenated hemoglobin.
